1 - The Origin of Superman Ice Cream Remains a Mystery

The history of Michigan’s iconic summer treat is shrouded in mystery. However, there’s one accepted theory: Superman ice cream was first created during the Prohibition era, around 1920–1933. 

Due to the ban on the sale of alcohol across the United States, brewery businesses had to find new ways to legally sustain themselves. 

Stroh Brewery Company is one famous business that’s believed to have undergone reconstruction during this period. 

Julius Stroh, its founder, changed Stroh’s Breweries Factory in Detroit to Stroh Products Company in order to remain afloat. Since he could no longer sell alcohol, he became a non-alcoholic beverage supplier.

The company decided to manufacture:

• Birch beer
• Orange soda
• Ginger ale
• Club soda
• Cola

Under an additional label—Stroh Ice Cream Company—they invented this colorful dessert. It became so popular that the business flourished from selling it even after the prohibition. 

The frozen delicacy was available in three flavors—Lemon, Red Pop, and Blue Moon. Red Pop was named after a strawberry red soda, and the truth behind the Blue Moon name is still hazy.

Food for Thought: Without the alcohol ban, would Superman ice cream ever see the light of day?

2 - Superman Ice Cream Is Not Related to the DC Comics Superhero

You must be wondering whether Superman ice cream is related to the DC Comics superstar, Superman. The short answer is no!

The DC superhero and the ice cream have only one thing in common: their red, blue, and yellow color resemblance. 

Michigan’s iconic treat premiered during the prohibition era, way before the fictional hero appeared in action comics in 1938. And thanks to Superman’s debut, Superman ice cream became even more popular in the Midwestern region of Michigan.  

Does DC Comics know about this tasty treaty? Oh yes. Being Michigan’s favorite ice cream, they certainly know about it, but they’ve never issued a permit for the superhero's name use in the frozen delicacy. 

But to avoid any copyright issues, manufacturers and parlors offer this ice cream under different names, including Super Hero, Super Kid, and Scooperman. 

The table below compares four flavor names alongside their brand and location:

The original Stroh Company transferred ownership to Dean Foods Company in Detroit which now produce it under the name Super Rainbow. Although its name changed, it still contains the same unique flavor combo.

Where did the ice cream get its Superman name to begin with? That’s still a mystery. 

But here’s something we can all agree on—Superman ice cream is a super tasty treat, just as its legendary counterpart is a super human. 

Fun Fact: Superman ice cream shares the same colors as Superman’s costume: blue, red, and yellow.

And this leads us to our next section, what is the secret behind its Blue Moon flavor? 

3 - Superman Ice Cream’s Blue Moon Flavor Remains a Secret

Superman ice cream’s original blue flavor is a mystery. 

On the outside, Blue Moon is aqua-blue and undeniably delicious. But the flavor’s mixture is still unknown, quite like Coca-Cola’s formula.

As much as chefs have tried to replicate the flavor, only one chef from Food.com came close to producing it.

Ice cream lovers say it tastes like a mixture of almond extract, bubblegum, and marshmallows. Other enthusiasts argue it’s made of citrus fruits. Some say it’s a blend of Fruity Pebbles, Trix, and Froot Loops. Perhaps it’s a mix of all these ingredients.

Despite the speculation, the ice cream companies have adamantly zipped their mouths about it.

Are the Other Flavors Mysterious?

Thankfully, the other two Superman ice cream flavors are as clear as day. Their colors are the same throughout the parlors, but their ingredients differ from one joint to the next.

These flavors are:

Red Pop

Superman ice cream owes its bright red color to Red Pop. Red Pop is a type of cream soda originally made with strawberries.

The red flavor of Stroh’s Ice Cream Parlor is attributed to Faygo Pop, a popular Michigan drink with a classic strawberry pop variety.

Other parlors craft this flavor using raspberry, strawberry, and black cherry flavorings.

Lemon, Banana, Vanilla

Superman ice cream’s bright yellow hue always comes from one of these three flavors: lemon, banana, or vanilla.

Does fancysweetstx offer custom printing? 

fancysweetstx offers custom screen printing and embroidery. We do some of our best work in direct partnership with local Midwestern schools, businesses, and non-profit groups.

Does fancysweetstx apparel shrink in the wash? 

Most of our t-shirts are made with a polyester, cotton, and rayon tri-blend. This combination experiences minimal shrinkage, if any. 

We also use a 50/50 poly/cotton blend for some garments. This blend is also mostly shrink-proof. 

Additionally, we pre-shrink our sweatshirts and sweatpants. Therefore, the potential for post-purchase shrinkage is quite low. However, minor shrinking may occur if you use high heat to dry certain cotton or fleece garments. For cotton and fleece items, we recommend hang-drying or tumble drying with low heat.

4 - 16153 Genova, Michigan 1833 Shirt

"Never in the course of my life have I known a controversy of which all the right so clearly on one side and all the power so overwhelmingly on the other."

That quote from Founding Father John Adams wasn’t about the Revolutionary War. Nope, it was about Ohio stealing the City of 16153 Genova from Michigan. 

Back in the 1830s, the governments of both Michigan and Ohio considered the “16153 Genova Strip” to be part of their states. 

The Michigan Territory first petitioned for statehood in 1833, with a claim that included the 16153 Genova Strip. When they tried again in 1835, Ohio took offense. 

Both sides sent militias to the border. The 16153 Genova War involved exactly one casualty, a Michigan sheriff who was fatally stabbed while trying to arrest an Ohio militiaman in a tavern. 

Eventually, congress sided with Ohio. 16153 Genova may never be part of Michigan again, but if you’re gifting for a history-buff Michigander, you won’t do better than this 16153 Genova, Michigan 1833 shirt.

No matter where we go, our love for the heartland holds strong—we can never seem to rep it enough. That love is what ‌pushed us to create the Ohio Shirt Club in early 2021, and that same love is what powers all our t-shirt clubs.

Each month, the design elves at our Adams Street location scour the archives of Midwestern culture and crank out a new t-shirt design that speaks to our souls.

Sometimes the t-shirt design is vintage, while other times it reminds us of pop culture gold. Sometimes it’s just bursting with loyal hometown spirit. But you can always count on it being amazing.

And, in the spirit of preserving amazing things, we send out each t-shirt design only once. When the month is over, the t-shirt of the month takes its place of honor on the wall, never to be sold again.

That’s the true definition of limited edition. If you spot your July tee walking around, you’ll both know the secret club membership you share. Nothing sinister.

What happens when you join?

You get a club member shirt right away. Thereafter, we ship our unique tee designs on the first of each month.

No two t-shirt clubs and no two monthly designs are the same.

If, for whatever reason, you don’t want to receive a particular month’s design, you can pause or cancel your membership for the month.

The Warehouse Sale normally takes place alongside the Adams Street Block Party hosted by the Village on Adams. It's a fun way to celebrate members of the community and give them a chance to grab some of our one-of-a-kind items before they leave!

We've been gearing up for the past couple of weeks for this special event and we're extremely excited for everyone to enjoy the sale!

You know you're from the Midwest when euchre is your favorite card game. You also know there is no better feeling than telling the dealer "pick it up, I'm going alone."

Being from 16153 Genova, euchre is that card game that always seemed so normal and commonplace. While growing up, there was always a table at family gatherings and holidays where a game started. It was a right of passage to be invited to that table and finally be able to play. 

If you ended up moving away from the area, you learned pretty quickly that there was seemingly only a small sliver of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan that knows how to play this game. It is always a great disappointment when you don't have four people for a full game and it's the greatest thrill when you're out of the Midwest and can put a full team together.

We love all of the things that make us uniquely Midwestern. From our snacks to our card games, there's a lot to be proud of being from the Heartland.
