2 Best Shirt Materials That Are Comfy

by John Amato

When shopping for custom printed shirts, you may be more focused on the design than on the actual t-shirt. After all, choosing a shirt should be as easy as walking into a store and picking one in your favorite color.

However, in addition to considering a shirt’s style, color, and price, you must also consider its material.

The best shirt materials are comfortable and soft.

Certain fabrics will naturally affect your skin. Choosing a shirt with the right material is especially important if you suffer from sensitive skin.

Here’s what you should consider when looking for the best comfortable material for shirts:

  • Breathable: Keeps the body cool
  • Natural: Hypo-allergenic and biodegradable
  • Soft: Gentle on the skin, and comfortable to wear all year-round
  • Absorbent: Soaks up moisture and keeps you dry
  • Odorless: Repels smells and sweat

So, what materials offer the optimal mix of the above factors?

Well, today you’ll learn the:

  • Two best fabrics for your skin
  • Right fabric blend for high-quality shirts

Cotton

Cotton takes the crown for being the most natural fabric to wear. It’s breathable, weightless, and soft.

Cotton spinning dates back to 3000 BC India, and today popular types of cotton include Egyptian cotton, pima cotton, and cotton twill.

At fancysweetstx, it’s no secret that we love using organic cotton. Below are a few reasons why:

  • Comfortable and breathable: Cotton is naturally hollow fiber, meaning air passes through it easily. This breathability makes cotton ideal for hot and humid climates.

Athletes and construction workers will likely wear cotton shirts because they’re comfortable and breathable, making it easier to cool down on a hot summer’s day.

  • Moisture control: Cotton fiber draws moisture away from the body, which helps keep you dry. In fact, cotton holds up to 27 times its weight.
  • Suitable for printing: We love how cotton takes on practically any form of decoration.

It’s one of our preferred materials for our custom screen printing and embroidery business. Through it, we’ve been able to come up with some cool designs.

Poly/Cotton Blends

Even though linen and silk are strong contenders for the most comfortable and soft fabrics, they’re still inferior to the qualities that fabric blends offer.

Linen wrinkles easily and loses its biodegradable properties when bleached or dyed. Silk is costly to buy and maintain and tends to shrink.

The term polyblend was originally used to refer to a blend of two or more polyester materials. But today, polyblend refers to a combination of polyester with cotton.

Blending fabrics gives you the best of both worlds that you wouldn’t otherwise enjoy when using individual fabrics.

Examples of popular blends include cotton and spandex; cotton, polyester, and spandex; rayon and polyester; polyester and viscose. Below are some advantages of these blends:

  • Cotton/Polyester/Rayon: Comfortable, breathable, and a little stretchy
  • Cotton/Poly: Soft, shrinks less than 100% cotton, and breathable
  • Rayon/Polyester: More comfortable and softer than rayon or polyester alone
  • Polyester/Viscose: Durable, softer, and resistant to shrinking

Although blends will vary from producer to producer, here are some of the more common ratios:

  • 50% Cotton / 25% Polyester / 25% Rayon. This blend is breathable, versatile, and easy to take care of. It’s popular for vintage style shirts.
  • 50% Polyester / 50% Cotton. This blend offers comfort, durability, weightlessness, and less shrinkage than pure cotton.
  • 10% Polyester / 90% Cotton. This is a popular t-shirt blend because it offers softness, comfort, and breathability. The 10% polyester can add heathering to the shirts or brightness for safety apparel.
