At fancysweetstx, we use Tajima embroidery machines. So our artwork files are conversted to .DST embroidery files.

To prevent the hat from moving around and distorting the stitches, a stabilizer or backing is used. The stabilizer is placed underneath the design and hooped together with the hat.

Next, the embroidery settings (speed, thread color, and placement) are configured and the machine is set in motion, with several hats getting embroidered at once.

Fun Fact: fancysweetstx embroidery machines run at about 600 stitches per minute and we can embroider six hats at a time.

  To solve this issue, additional support, such as a stabilizer, is used but cannot always eliminate the problem entirely.

These sweatshirts for Special Grounds coffee are unique because they are a combination of felt applique and embroidery.

This is the first and only time we've used both of these techniques in one design. And we couldn't be more happy with how they turned out.

The felt applique qualifies as embroidery because the felt is sewn onto the the sweatshirts with the embroidery machine. An outline of the felt is stitched, we place the felt within that outline, and then the edges are secured with a zigzag stitch.

Our embroiderer, Jodi, has been with us for more than three years now. She has over 20 years experience in embroidery and is one of the best people to see at work each day. 

When she came on board, we added a brand new 6 head embroidery machine. This machine can stitch up to six items with the same logo at one time.

What’s more, archaeologists have been unable to pinpoint this beautiful craft to a specific civilization. Touches of embroidered craft have been found in China, Egypt, and Europe—basically across the globe.

It's no wonder, therefore, that this beautiful craft is loved across cultures, age groups, and genders. More than anything, it makes each item of clothing it adorns unique.

Today, we’ll discuss puff embroidery, or 3D embroidery, which is a technique that gives embroidered text more texture and depth.

You've most probably seen 3D embroidery stitched into the hats of major-league baseball clubs. However, this technique can also be used on sweatshirts, beanies, and bags.

Let’s delve deeper into puff embroidery and learn three fascinating facts about it while exploring:

• How puff embroidery is done
• How it's different from flat embroidery
• Brilliant designs that feature puff embroidery

1 - Puff Embroidery Developed From Stumpwork

Stumpwork is an embroidery technique that was popular in England in the 17th century. At that time, it was known as raised or embossed work.

This style uses wire or padding to raise the design on a garment’s surface and achieve a 3D effect.

In the 17th century, stumpwork was the ultimate embroidery technique that girls from affluent backgrounds would practice. Since embroidery was an indicator of status and wealth, it was, as such, part of a wealthy girl’s education.

The hand-stitched designs would usually tell a story and were often inspired by:

• Flowers
• Biblical stories
• Classic mythology
• Royalty

As we got closer to the 20th century, stumpwork gained popularity and was used to embellish women’s clothing across the globe.

The late 20th century saw the development of computerized embroidery machines, which completely changed stumpwork and embroidery techniques.

Puff embroidery resulted from this revolution as a more creative type of stumpwork that was done using automated embroidery machines.

Though 3D embroidery lacks the intricacy of stumpwork, it makes up for it with a sleek and elevated finish that really makes their designs pop.

2 - Puff Embroidery Is Achieved by the Use of Foam

As mentioned before, puff embroidery is a type of stumpwork in which designs are raised from the surface of the garment.

However, instead of the wire or padding used in stumpwork techniques, foam is used in puff embroidery to achieve dimensional depth.

The type of foam used should be puffy and able to withstand the repeated punctures of embroidery needles without tearing.

The repeated punching of the needlework process cuts the foam into its desired shape, causing it to increase in size and puff out. This results in a design that appears raised from the surface of the garment.

The standard thickness of foam used in raised texture design is usually 3 mm. However, if more depth is desired, foam with a thickness of 4 mm or 6 mm can be used.

Here’s the basic process of puff embroidering products:

1. A digitized design, which is often made up of text and/or numbers, is transferred to the embroidery machine.
2. The embroidery machine reads the design and details, such as orientation and thread color, are entered.
3. The garment is then positioned on the embroidery machine, and a piece of foam (larger than the design) is taped over the area where the design will be embroidered.
4. The design is then stitched on the foam with the needlework cutting the foam into the intended shape.
5. Once the logo is embroidered, excess foam is removed from the garment, revealing the finished 3D embroidery.

While the design can be stitched on the product directly, some designs require a flat embroidery outline before the foam is positioned.

This additional step is necessary when creating an outline of stitching around letters and/or numbers. These stitches add more detail to a design and are usually done in a different color from the puffed text, creating greater contrast and a sharper looking design.

Here’s an example of a puff embroidery design embellished with flat embroidery.

The flat embroidery technique used lays flat on the surface of the product. Unlike puff embroidery, which uses puffy foam, thread, and needles, flat embroidery is done using needles and thread only.

The table below shows the differences between puff embroidery and flat embroidery.

3 - Puff Embroidery Works Best on Simple Designs

Since 3D embroidery requires the use of puffy foam, intricate designs are difficult to achieve.

The foam, which is 3 mm or thicker, increases in size once cut and needs a gap of at least 3 mm in width between shapes for clean and crisp results.

Any attempt at a small and intricate design using puff embroidery will end up looking cramped and untidy. Letters smaller than 8 mm will also be unreadable and won’t result in a three-dimensional look.

As such, puff embroidery works best for:

• Rounded block letters
• Numbers
• Simple text logos

This is why 3D embroidery is very popular on club baseball caps, since many of them feature initials as their logo.

The fabric type also plays a crucial role in how puff embroidery looks. Thin and light materials, such as t-shirts and tank tops, can't support the structure of foam and will be prone to faster wear and tear.

Thicker materials, on the other hand, are sturdy enough to support the foam and extra stitching needed for puff embroidery.

Some thick materials often used for 3D embroidery are:

• Hats
• Caps
• Bags
• Sweatshirts
• Hoodies

Whether you’re a baseball, hockey, or soccer fan, you probably have a strong emotional connection to one of these teams from Columbus. 

At fancysweetstx, we offer customized t-shirt screen printing and embroidery services to the Columbus area. Because of this, we thought it would be fun to take a closer look at the logos of these popular Columbus sports teams.

Here are some well-known Columbus logos and the meaning behind them.

1 - The Columbus Blue Jackets Patriotic Logo

Columbus Blue Jackets  have had three logos since their inception in November 1997. 

The first logo had an inscription and an emblem with a red ribbon and 13 stars, which stood for the 13 American colonies. This logo also featured a yellow J-shaped hockey stick, symbolizing Columbus, topped off with the Ohio silver star.

The second logo still had the 13 white stars and the yellow J-shaped hockey stick. But the “Columbus Blue Jackets” textual elements were removed.

Finally, the third logo features a sizable silver star wrapped up in the Ohio flag in a letter “C” shape.

The following table shows the evolution of the Columbus Blue Jackets logo from its initial design in 2000 to its current design.

The logos are a reflection of Ohio’s patriotism—they pay tribute to Ohio’s tremendous efforts during the American Civil War. 

The state of Ohio was extremely proud of the role it played in helping the Northern Army by deploying military personnel. It supplied 319,189 Union soldiers who contributed to the army’s victory. 

The Union soldiers wore blue uniforms, which gave rise to the name “Columbus Blue Jackets.”

Although the logo designs have changed over the years, they still bear the same meaning—Ohio’s patriotism.

2 - The Columbus Crew SC Hard-Work Representation Logo

The Columbus Crew SC club has had four logos since its origin in 1996. The first logo had three silhouetted men wearing safety hats underneath a stylized “Crew” word mark. 

This logo was designed to represent a group of hard-working people.

After more than 15 years, October 8, 2014 saw the release of the second logo. It had a new circular-shaped badge with the club’s traditional yellow and black colors.

The shield in the logo paid homage to the team’s original emblem, while the “96” represented 1996—the team’s first year in competition.

The third and fourth logos were both created in 2021. The fourth logo was different from the third in that the word “crew” replaced “SC”. Then“96” was added at the bottom right side to complete the new logo.

The logos had a new design (banner shape) but retained the meaning of the previous badge—a representation of hard work.

The following table shows the evolution of the Columbus Crew SC logo from its first design in 1996 to its current design.

3 - The Columbus Clippers Speedy Merchant Ships Logo

The Columbus Clippers team has had two logos since its inception in 1996. The logos are notable because they feature a stylized depiction of a clipper ship—a sailing vessel that was extremely fast and sleek.

The emphasis on the name came because the clipper ship was known for three things:

• Being streamlined and built for speed
• Carrying as much canvas as possible
• Sailing day and night in all weather conditions

The logos show a ship sailing out of the large blue “C” stylized waves—a symbol of the team’s marine theme roots and competitive resilience.

Although the logos’ message has remained the same, the ship’s design has changed over time. The first logo shows a ship sailing out of the “C”, while the second one features the now much smaller ship sailing over the team’s full name.

Are Embroidered Garments Delicate?

Embroidery is a craft in which a needle and thread are used to add decorative designs on fabric. Embroidery may be done by hand or by machine.

Embroidered hoodies might seem fancy … so does this mean that they’re fragile?

Well, embroidered or not, hoodies are made for daily wear, not a night at the opera. 

However, a few things can go wrong with embroidery. These include:

• Color bleeding
• Disconnection from the garment if the garment shrinks

Want to keep that embroidery looking sharp? Avoid heavy friction and intense heat, and don’t let your hoodie shrink. 

Follow the washing, drying, and ironing tips outlined below and your embroidered hoodie will be just fine.

1 - Tips for Machine Washing Embroidered Hoodies

Don’t be scared to put your embroidered hoodie in the washing machine. Everybody wants to avoid a laundry disaster, but the fact is, they don’t happen as often as they used to. 

A load of wash involves these three components:

• The garments
• The washing machine
• The laundry detergent

In recent decades, the industries producing each of these three components have made strides that prevent laundry problems.  

Garments are more often made using shrink-proof blends, washing machines are less likely to over-soak or overheat their loads, and modern detergents are able to provide effective cleaning in laundry-safe cold water. 

Compared to the old days, there’s a lot less shrinking and color bleeding going on. 

That said, there’s nothing wrong with being extra careful. 

Here are the best machine-washing tips for your embroidered hoodie. Use these methods to avoid heavy friction, overheating, thread damage, and garment shrinkage.

Don’t Wash Too Frequently

Don’t wash your sweatshirts more than necessary. Machine washing doesn’t (often) quickly destroy garments, but it does wear them out gradually over time. 

If your hoodie doesn’t smell bad or show visible signs of grime, then what’s the rush?

Wash With Cold Water

Cold water washing is a tough sell, but it’s the way to go. 

We’re taught from a young age that hot water is better for cleaning. Generally speaking, that’s obviously true. However, when it comes to laundry, hotter isn’t better. 

Today’s detergents are designed to clean clothes in cold water. They contain enzymes that were specially developed to work in chilly water. 

Using hot water, on the other hand, increases the chance of something going wrong. Hot or warm water can cause shrinkage or color bleeding, damaging the stitching of your hoodie’s embroidery. 

It’s worth noting that most of the energy use associated with laundry comes from heating the water. Therefore, along with lowering the risk of garment damage, washing with cold water is significantly cheaper and more environmentally-friendly than washing with hot water.

Sort Your Light and Dark Laundry

Sorting laundry by colors isn’t as important as it used to be. Modern synthetic fibers like polyester hold onto their colors better than cotton. Plus, if you’re savvy enough to wash with cold water, this also reduces the likelihood of color bleeding. 

While major color bleeding is a rarity in modern laundry, you might want to be extra sensitive with your embroidered garments⁠—especially when it comes to light-colored embroidery. 

Even a small amount of color bleeding onto embroidery can do major harm to its appearance. Picture big, white, embroidered lettering with ugly pink splotches. 

If you want to lower the chance of color damage, separate your darks and whites. If your hoodie’s embroidery is white (even if the rest of the sweatshirt isn’t), wash it with your whites.

Don’t Overstuff the Washing Machine

When a washing machine is overloaded, more friction occurs during the wash cycle. When a load is too heavy, the surfaces of all the garments repeatedly grind against one another. This action can tear apart embroidery stitching. 

To avoid overloading, load your machine to a maximum of three-fourths full.

Use a Laundry Bag

To protect embroidered clothing, use a laundry bag, also known as a washer bag or a garment bag. 

A laundry bag is a sack that can be safely run through a wash cycle. Laundry bags are made from mesh, or a similar material, which allows water and soap to penetrate the garment but prevents heavy contact with other items. 

When you wash your embroidered hoodie in a laundry bag, the embroidered area is subjected to less harmful friction, reducing the chance of damage.

2 - Tips for Drying Embroidered Hoodies

Drying machines are convenient, but, whenever possible, hang drying should be your first choice.

Like cold water washing, hang drying is another win-win-win. Enjoy these advantages when you hang dry:

• Save money on energy costs
• Environmentally friendly 
• Reduce garment damage and shrinkage 

Putting your embroidered hoodie in the dryer exposes the sensitive embroidery to unnecessary moisture, friction, and heat. To preserve your hoodie, and any other clothing that you want to be careful with, choose hang-drying as often as possible.

3 - Tips for Ironing Embroidered Hoodies

Sweatshirts made from a cotton/poly blend (like most fancysweetstx hoodies) have a very low wrinkle factor. 

You probably don’t typically feel the need to iron your hoodies. However, if they’re made from 100% cotton, or if you just really like wearing freshly-ironed clothes, you might break out the iron. 

If you do iron your embroidered hoodie, take great care not to do damage. Don’t directly iron the embroidery. Only iron the non-embroidered side of the garment. 

For extra protection, place another article of clothing between the embroidery and the ironing board to act as a shield against heat and friction while you iron.

3 - Digitize Your Design

We convert your logo or artwork into a format, which the embroidery machine can execute as stitches. For this, we use software specific to the machine and add the cost of this service into your quote.

This is a one time fee per digitized file. So if you re-order embroidered polos from us, you will only have to pay the digitizing fee once.

• Gradients: The machine can only sew so small. If you are blending colors together of fading a color into a gradient, the transition will be more noticeable than digital or screen print.

After your order is embroidered, there are finishing tasks involved with completing it - trimming excess thread, removing backing, folding, and boxing.
