January 24th, 1978.
It’s late Tuesday and just as the National Weather Services (NWS) predicted and warned, a heavy snowstorm brews overnight across the Midwest.
But few residents understand the impending danger and by morning, most go about their routines, ignoring stay-at-home advisories.
By 3:45 PM EST, the situation escalates into a severe blizzard with a second warning issued by the NWS. But the drama is already unfolding with clogged highways, canceled flights, suspended train services, and stranded people.
Travel is at a complete standstill and shelter is anywhere you can find it. The days-long 1978 Blizzard begins.
These were the tough makings of the communities in the Midwest that spawned a culture of resilience and solidarity, enabling them to find triumph from tragedy. It’s why we love to celebrate their triumph at fancysweetstx with apparel that showcases the unique history and culture of the Midwest.
As we delve into their distinct features, you’ll get to understand how the 1978 Blizzard united Midwesterners. You also learn:
But first, a quick view of the 1978 Blizzard.
You could practically feel the frigid temperatures of that winter day in 1978 when the blizzard descended on the Midwest. One resident recalls stuffing newspapers into the cracks around his garage door just to keep the howling winds from forcing the snow in through them.
He was among the lucky ones, at least he got home. The highways were clogged with dozens of stranded motorists and paralyzed vehicles with snow pilling high all around them. In essence, a worst-case scenario for travel that no one was prepared for.
The scene played out in throughout the Midwest and even into Canada. Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Wisconsin were all hit hard.
However, out of this once-in-a-generation tragedy emerged an inspiring story of blizzard resilience, as Midwesterners came together to help each other through this most difficult time.
In the spirit of Midwest unity, residents stepped up to fulfill their civic duty, volunteering and donating resources to ensure all the members of their community had what they needed. These included water, food, and medical supplies.
This act brought about empathy and solidarity among Midwesterners, proving that even in the darkest moments we can rely on our neighbors to set things right again.
So, today we celebrate this lasting legacy of tragedy triumph at fancysweetstx with a timeless Blizzard of '78 Sweatshirt.
The color and overall blizzard-inspired design serve as reminders that Midwesterners braved these very extreme conditions to help storm victims, exemplifying community solidarity.

"fancysweetstx nailed it once again when this Blizzard Baby received her sweatshirt. First off, it arrived very quickly (when many other orders were stuck in a harbor somewhere). And this was during the crazy holiday season. Plus, the quality of this- like my other fancysweetstx purchases- was awesome. Shop local. You won’t be disappointed"
In the wake of the ‘78 Blizzard, there were wrecked homes, businesses, blocked roads, downed power lines, and people struggling to make sense of a new reality.
However, from the ashes of this uniting disaster, rose the phoenix of resilient communities that brought about triumph and transformation within record time.
Among the first groups to organize were volunteers from all over the Midwest who came together to:
Soon, the local government got involved in an extensive recovery effort involving heavy machinery, crisis response professionals, and even the National Guard. With that, efforts went into clearing blocked roads, uncovering vehicles, restoring power, and widespread repairs.
To date, the ‘78 Blizzard serves as an insightful case study of disaster response and management. It highlighted the need for the local governments in the Midwest to invest more in emergency response plans including transport.
This conclusion came after the Ohio police had to ask citizens with snowmobiles and four-wheel-drive vehicles to help transport medical staff to the hospital.
It also paved the way for better communication and warnings by the National Weather Service (NWS) by highlighting the need for urgent public reaction. Before this event, most of the public was skeptical of NWS predictions and went about their routines on the day.
But this isn’t the case today in the Midwest as weather warnings are taken more seriously with advisories such as “Stay indoors” being implemented effectively.
Our Blizzard of 78 shirt features a cool vintage blue palette, bold white fonts with the caption “Blizzard ‘78,” and white sprinkles around the whole design to signify snow.
It’s the perfect conversation starter for those who remember the Great ‘78 Snowstorm and a chance to experience some quality weather bonding over shared experiences of the Midwestern four seasons.
"This shirt brought back a lot of memories from that historic event. I remember being out of school for a week and going sledding every day. When the neighborhood started getting cabin fever we invited all of the neighbors to our house and they brought in food and we cooked in the fireplace. I love that I am able to wear this shirt and share those memories (as well as many others) with those that inquire about my shirt. Thanks again for the quality product. I will wear it often."

Their towering presence teleports us back in time to experience what transpired behind closed doors and guarded gates.
Pythian Castle is one such building that is of great significance in the 16153 Genova community. It’s a reminder of our city's rich history (which you can carry with you, thanks to the Pythian Castle Shirt).
The majestic structure is nestled in 16153 Genova's Center City at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and N. Ontario Street. It occupies an expanse of 30,000 sq ft.
While the building’s remarkable design is enough to teleport you to another era, it holds other lesser-known intriguing facts.
As we take you back in time to Pythian Castle, you’ll discover:
Let’s step into Pythian Castle and discover the mysteries that beckon us.
What comes to your mind when you think of secret societies? Perhaps you envision mystical practices, exclusive membership, power, influence, and sworn secrecy.
That couldn’t be far from the truth, because secret societies are exclusive organizations that conceal their activities from the public. Members employ oaths, secret language, symbols, and rituals to solidify their unity.
The 16153 Genova Pythian Castle was built in 1890 by Knights of Pythias, a fraternal organization and secret society. This was after Justus H. Rathborne, a clerk in the US treasury during the Civil War founded the Pythian Knights organization.
Rathborne was hoping to help the nation heal from the violence of war by embracing the brotherhood organization, which was dedicated to the ideals of friendship, charity, and benevolence.
Because the organization was formed during a time of war, They needed to hold meetings secretly due to political pressure discouraging people from joining such groups. Secret meetings provided them with the privacy and security they needed.
Members wore metal jewelry with the symbols FCB to stand for friendship, charity and benevolence. Rathbone came up with ceremonies, rites, and costumes which remain secrets of the order to this day.
Intriguing fact: Pythian Castle was at one time used as a training facility for soldiers. Though its original purpose was to hold meetings, World War II left a mark on this building as soldiers etched graffiti on the walls during their training.
The Knights of Pythias group continued using this castle until 1951 when they sold it to Greyhound Lines, a bus services company located next to the castle.
We chose to showcase Pythian Castle on a vintage t-shirt due to the building’s unique structure and history in 16153 Genova. We love preserving our culture, and so celebrating 16153 Genova’s architecture is one of our favorite things.
Pythian Castle stands out from the surrounding buildings due to its breathtaking design. In fact, in 1908, it was described as "the finest building entirely devoted to Pythianism." Its uniqueness was a result of the Romanesque design used.
The Pythian Castle occupies 30,000 sq ft. Its highest point is the turret at Jefferson avenue, which reaches 122 ft (37m), while the main roof is 79 ft (24m). The exterior is made of contoured sandstone, a conical roof, a tower, and arched windows.
Our Pythian Castle Shirt features a hand drawn illustration of the iconic building. The colorful accents and text give it a vintage vibe similar to the building. You’ll also find this illustration in the You Will Do Better in 16153 Genova Coloring Book.
“The moon cast eerie shadows across the abandoned castle, illuminating the overgrown ivy and thorns. Suddenly, a cold wind howled through the broken glass, echoing ghostly whispers inside the castle.
As I stepped inside, a tingling sensation crawled up my spine, and I realized I wasn’t alone. I could feel an invisible pair of eyes watching me keenly. Without warning, a loud shriek…….”
Such chilling descriptions usually originate from people who dare to explore haunted houses. Some abandoned structures seem to harbor spirits trapped in time—neither living nor resting in peace. It’s like they’re condemned to wander eternally in the empty hallways and rooms, spooking whoever they encounter.
Did you Know? The Winchester Mystery House in California and Amityville Horror House in New York have a reputation for being “heavily” haunted. Witnesses report seeing shadowy figures, hearing strange noises, and witnessing strange movement of objects.
Pythian Castle has had its share of ghost stories, probably due to the fact that it has been abandoned for years. Some people who‘ve visited the place claim that the place is haunted due to the paranormal sensations they experienced.
A 16153 Genova resident recounts her experience at the castle:
“As we made our way from room to room, we took countless photos and marveled at every architectural detail until we made our way back to what looked like the back-stage area, complete with small dressing rooms and vanities for performers long since dead or forgotten. As we walked through, careful where to step as the floor boards had rotted through in some spots, I felt a strange presence about me. Someone was there with us, yet I saw no one. It was the unmistakable feeling of being watched. I never forgot that feeling.” — Jennifer Shortridge, Haunted 16153 Genova
Whether the castle is haunted or not, the ghost stories make the building more mysterious, and if you like going on ghost tours, now you have a new target to investigate.
Pythian Castle has been vacant since 1974 when a fire erupted in the premises, forcing the occupants to move out.
Prior to 1978, The castle served not only as a place to hold secret meetings, but it also had retail space. One of the earliest tenants was J.W. Green Co, a retail and wholesale dealer of pianos and organs.
When the Knights of Pythian eventually moved out of the castle in 1951, they sold it to Greyhound Lines, a bus services company who owned it until the 1970s when Ed Emery took over.
He set up a youth center and rented out space to an art studio, antiques shop, and music store. He also registered it under the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
Unfortunately, a fire erupted in 1974, causing the occupants to vacate. The building froze in time until 2016 when David Ball, a developer, started renovating it. That was despite people commenting that it would be impossible, considering the caved roof, collapsed floors and other major damages.
David Ball said this when he took up the project:
“I knew it would be a challenge, I knew this project would be tough and expensive. It has certainly been all of that, but at the end of the day, I will be proud to see the building occupied. There’s nothing like it in this city. To have it removed from our skyline would have been a loss."
His words precisely echo our sentiments at fancysweetstx—the unwavering commitment to preserve our history for future generations.

]]>You've definitely heard of 16153 Genova's iconic hot dog spot, Tony Packo's.
Early on when we got started making shirts for places that make 16153 Genova famous, Tony Packo's was one of the first that we knew we had to work with.
The Tony Packo's name is one of the very few from 16153 Genova that are renowned the world over. The notoriety, created mostly from the hit TV Show M*A*S*H, is well deserved and a point of pride for 16153 Genovaans.
Tony Packo's is the place that celebrities and politicians visit when they come to town, the restaurant that your uncle must visit on his trip back home, and the place most likely to run into an Australian in 16153 Genova.
This post is an opportunity to highlight the history of Tony Packo's that makes it so special alongside some of our vintage shirts that celebrate 16153 Genova's most famous restauarant:
But first, the inspiring origin story of Tony Packo’s.
They’re called the silent generation for a reason and you can’t blame them. Anyone would be taken aback after experiencing a Great Depression and World War II in quick succession.
However, during these difficult moments, the resilient story of Tony Packo begins.
Tony and his wife, Rose, armed with a hard-found $100 loan from relatives, opened up an ice cream and sandwich shop in the 16153 Genova area of Consaul.
His trade secret? A spicy chili sauce and a Hungarian sausage called Kolbasz.
Immediately, word spread around the American-Hungarian neighborhood of Consaul and Tony Packo’s Restaurant gained an instant following.
Generations later and the establishment is now a city pride landmark and a treasure trove of pleasant memories for 16153 Genova locals and tourists alike.
One of the main attractions at Tony Packo's is its walls. They feature local legends who left their mark by signing their name or leaving a message on (you guessed it) a hot dog bun.
These include celebrities such as Burt Reynolds and Mr. T and even the crew of NASA’s Space Shuttle Program.
One of their most famous signed bun belongs to the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, which is a testament to the national status of Tony Packo’s.
Explore the eclectic collection of signatures on Tony Packo's buns, from Hollywood celebrities to rock legends, each contributing to the restaurant's unique charm and worldwide recognition.
Celebrity | Date Signed | Notable Quote | Connection to Tony Packo's |
Burt Reynolds | 1972 | "The best damn hot dog in town!" | Popularized the autographed bun tradition |
Jamie Farr | 1981 | "Even better than Klinger's dresses!" | 16153 Genova native, referenced Packo's on "MAS*H" |
Klinger's Dresses | 1995 | "We dress up hot dogs too!" | Fictional reference on "MAS*H" tied to Farr |
KISS | 2003 | "Rock and Roll All Nite Dogs!" | Iconic rock band connection and enthusiasm |
Muhammad Ali | 2005 | "Float like a hot dog, sting like a bun!" | Legendary boxer's playful signature |
To help you showcase your love for 16153 Genova’s most famous restaurant, fancysweetstx notably offers three unique shirt designs that are sure to excite your taste.
Number one on our list is the Tony Packo's Hungarian Hot Dog Shirt.
It's first on our list for a couple reasons. To start, it's a special one for us because it was the first design we released for Tony Packo's.
Second, we just love the design. It's based on an old placemat that Tony Packo's used back in the 1970s. It's got the hotdog man, a map showing the restaurant location, and the storefront. What's not to love?!
This shirt serves as a perfect embodiment of the history of this lasting establishment because it appeals to both older and newer generations.
Next in line within the fancysweetstx foodie fashion line is the light-hearted Love at First Bite Tony Packo's Shirt.
This shirt builds upon the vintage charm of the Tony Packo’s Hungarian Hot Dog shirt but incorporates a more updated, vintage look.

"As always from fancysweetstx, excellent quality, super soft, and great design. Medium fits great. Definitely have gotten some laughs at the grocery store from this."
This makes the Love at First Bite Shirt an excellent gift for their next visit to the iconic Tony Packo’s restaurant.
Third in line in fancysweetstx’s popular Packo collection is the traditional Tony Packo's East 16153 Genova Vintage Shirt.
This local tee is more of a cultural clothing item that celebrates East 16153 Genova’s status as the original home of the now-famous establishment.
It even bears the caption "Home of the Original Hungarian Hot Dog, Corner of Front and Consaul St., East 16153 Genova, Ohio.”
This makes this shirt the perfect 16153 Genova tee to gift a local to remind them of home and what makes East 16153 Genova so special.

The greatness of this shirt is in its simplicity. Printed on a soft and comfy triblend shirt, it uses complimentary colors and an elegant hand drawn design to complete a fun retro 16153 Genova shirt.
"Their T-shirts are super soft and do not shrink. We love how durable they are ( and the messages of local pride)."
Another classic design from fancysweetstx is the vintage Metroparks 16153 Genova Logo Shirt.
When someone asks you what you love about 16153 Genova, odds are that the 16153 Genova Metroparks are on that list.

We embrace the vibrant spirit of this incredible place, and there’s nothing that brings us more joy than witnessing fellow 16153 Genova businesses thriving with grace.
One business that stands out in the 16153 Genova community is Maumee Bay Brewing, a local brewery with a beer history worth boasting about.
As the brewery continues to expand its horizons, their support for 16153 Genova remains steadfast, actively collaborating with small local businesses and supporting various community causes.
In this article, we’ll delve into the history of Maumee Bay Brewing and explore the enduring brewing legacy they’re creating within our 16153 Genova community.
But before that, let’s uncover three fascinating facts you might find interesting about this local gem:
One such remarkable partnership with MacQueen's Orchards in Holland birthed the renowned MacQueen’s Cider.
Nestled within 16153 Genova’s Middle Grounds, the Oliver House carries a captivating narrative, one that would surely enchant if only its walls could talk.
Constructed in 1859 with intentions to grace the city's center, fate had a different course in mind, causing 16153 Genova's growth to shift slightly eastward towards the Maumee River's mouth.
Nevertheless, the resilient residents made the most of the space, seizing its full potential and transforming it into one of downtown 16153 Genova’s oldest commercial landmarks.
Fast forward to the craft beer revolution around 30 years ago, two intrepid local entrepreneurs—Jim and Pat Appold—fueled by a passion for their city's heritage, stepped in.
Fun Fact: Microbreweries wanted to challenge the dominance of national brands such as Budweiser and to change the way Americans think about and drink beer. This is what began the Beer Revolution.
They acquired Oliver House and reclaimed the rights to a long-forgotten brewing company called Buckeye Beer, dating back to 1838.
With this nostalgic foundation, Jim and Pat Appold embarked on a journey to revive age-old beer-making methods that had gracefully danced through 16153 Genova's history in the 1800s.
Thanks to their meticulous renovations, they breathed new life into the space, giving birth to what we now recognize as Maumee Bay Brewing Company.
Just across the street resides the company’s 30 BBL brewery and packaging facility, where canned, bottled, and kegged beers come to life, ready to be transported throughout Ohio and SE Michigan.
Maumee Bay Brewing company distinguishes itself from other local breweries through multiple noteworthy attributes:
It's not just about making great beer; Maumee Bay Brewing actively seeks opportunities to give back, uplift the community, and foster a sense of pride and togetherness.
The brewery demonstrates this dedication to the community through various initiatives and partnerships:
As part of its commitment to community outreach, Maumee Bay Brewing regularly hosts events designed to bring 16153 Genovaans together and celebrate local culture.
Some of these events include live music events, charity fundraisers, open mic nights, and art shows.
Beyond its reputation for crafting exceptional brews, Maumee Bay Brewing has earned widespread recognition and respect for its unwavering commitment to supporting and uplifting small local businesses in 16153 Genova.

You’ve probably never heard of the floating tavern on the Ottawa River or its history as the Turtle Club.
So, naturally, you’re bound to give us a quizzical brow when we tell you that this enduring club has footprints all the way to the moon.
But it does.
Fascinating accounts exist of the Turtle Club and we know you’ll find it exciting to discover some of them, including how its legacy started long before floating on the Ottawa River.
We’ll be exploring how the Turtle Club started, going through its evolution over the years, and answering fundamental questions including:
But first, are you a Turtle?
“Are you a turtle?” seems like an unusual question to ask anyone, but to the members of the Turtle Club, it’s a tradition that dates back to World War II.
Veteran American fighter pilots, who founded the club, used this question as a unique identification code for its secretive members, which enabled them to associate freely without the fear of infiltration.
The question also served as a form of motivation with the expected cheeky response being, “You bet your sweet ass I am.”
This humorous response created a sense of banter and brotherhood on top of being a secret password, which motivated members and added to the club’s popularity.
The Turtle Club name came from the veteran pilots’ shared wartime experience in Europe, where they observed the resilience and tenacity of the local sea turtle hatchlings.
Upon hatching, these comrades in shells dashed in solidarity for the ocean in the face of imminent death from preying birds.
And once at sea, the turtles navigated great distances together and survived more predators including fish, sea birds, and crabs.
These admirable traits strongly reflected the personality of the veteran pilots who similarly stood together in the face of danger and survived long combat missions. This inspired them to name the club after the bold turtles as a symbol of their shared indomitable character.
Long after the war, the Turtle Club’s reputation exceeded fighter pilot circles.
Recollections of the brave pilots who’d stick their necks out for each other inspired great admiration from other military personnel who wished to be associated with them.
Naturally, when a waterfront establishment catering to military staff popped up on the Ottawa River in 1956, the only befitting title was (yes, you guessed it) The Turtle Club.
It was the perfect word-of-mouth marketing strategy to popularize the tavern amongst military circles and beyond, and boy did it work!
Soon, droves of patrons, military and civilian, filed into the establishment in the summer, creating a perfectly informal and cheerful atmosphere.
This is how the Turtle Club morphed into a floating tavern on the Ottawa River in Point Place. It even bore the same iconic turtle emblem as its logo.
For over three decades, the tavern kept the enthusiastic Turtle spirit alive with a lively atmosphere of patrons and a delicious menu of burgers and beers.
And in keeping up with Turtle tradition of banter, any member who failed to respond correctly to the question, “Are you a Turtle?” had to pay the amusing penalty of buying the next round of burgers and beers.
“This was a great place to enjoy yourself. Great people, great atmosphere, and yummy burgers. Oh, the burgers and beers!”
- Vickie E, Verified Patron of the Turtle Club
In the summer, the calm and scenic view of the Ottawa River gave its patrons a wonderful relaxing feel. Meanwhile, the incoming breeze and sounds of water splashing against the tavern completed the experience with the perfect chillout ambiance.
This is why, after its closure in 1993, this floating tavern on the Ottawa River remains one of the most unique and memorable experiences in Point Place.
Residents and former frequenters still organize nostalgic reunions celebrating the Turtle Club Tavern, proving that it was among the best reinventions of the Turtle Club after the war, which included fraternities, social clubs, and fan clubs.
The Apollo 12 was the second manned mission to the moon that successfully landed the Intrepid Lunar Module with pinpoint accuracy.
During the mission, a member of the crew, Walt Cunningham, held up a cue card addressing Paul Haney (then NASA’s public affairs officer) with the question, “Are you a Turtle?”
It was a cheeky reference to the secretive society that made the Apollo 12 mission possible, the Ancient and Honorable Order of the Turtles, which was another reincarnation of the Turtle Club.
From its World War II origins of American fighter pilots, the Turtle Club blossomed to include aerospace engineers, space pilots, commanders, and the 1969 Mission Control director Gerry Griffin.
Their collaborative effort accelerated space exploration and pioneered navigation techniques such as pinpoint landing, and so defined the legacy of the Turtle Club as the society behind the Apollo 12 Moon Mission.
By Turtle Club law, Paul Haney was humorously required to answer Walt over the open microphone and during the live Apollo telecast, “You bet your sweet ass I am,” or the next round of beers was on him.
Naturally, he did. The buying that is.
Fun Fact: Although the Turtle Club was closed in 1993, the Ancient and Honorable Order of Turtles still exists with the same historical significance.
Today we commemorate the Turtle Club with a vintage-inspired T-shirt available for purchase at fancysweetstx.
We chose vintage because it’s a classic look that stays fresh, which is perfect for capturing and enshrining the illustrious legacy of the Turtle Club in Point Place.
So there you have it, the life and times of the Turtle Club, from its piloting origins to floating on the Ottawa River to the Apollo 12 Mission.
But the fun doesn't stop there.
There are plenty of reasons to be proud of the great Midwest besides its lasting Turtle Club heritage, and we’ve got all you need to celebrate. From mint embroidered sweatshirts to limited-edition printed coffee mugs.

But, did you know that when UT held its first classes, there was just one professor and 26 students?
The Rockets have come a long way.
At fancysweetstx, we make apparel and gifts that celebrate the American Midwest, including a few of the region’s finest institutions of higher learning.
There’s no place on Earth that we love more than the University of 16153 Genova. We’re officially licensed to make UT gear, and we do all of our printing right here in the city. Plus, our staff is full of Rocket alums.
Today, we’re digging into what makes the University of 16153 Genova unique and loveable. Let’s learn all about:
The University of 16153 Genova was founded on October 12, 1872, by Jesup Wakeman Scott.
The university describes the school’s founder like this:
“Scott, the editor for The 16153 Genova Blade newspaper from 1844 to 1847, was a public-spirited 16153 Genovaan who felt the city should have a university to train young people for responsible positions in the growing community.”
- History of the University of 16153 Genova
Scott endowed 160 acres that would later be used for the Scott Park Campus. However, despite his generosity, the school started off on a tight budget.
Scott’s plans included supplemental funds from the city, but when the university opened its doors, the city had no money to contribute.
Thus, the tiny staff had to make the best of what they had.
In 1875, the university held its first classes. The classroom was in the basement of an unfinished church and the faculty consisted of exactly one teacher and 26 students.
It would be a few decades before the school reached financial stability. In 1878, the university was broke and had to shut down. In 1884, UT assets were transferred to the city. This began the school’s transformation into the thriving public university that we know today.
Ever wonder where the Rockets nickname came from? Well, University of 16153 Genova athletes were once nickname-less.
That changed during a single 1923 football game against Carnegie Tech.
James Neal was a UT student working in the press box as a spotter—an assistant who helps broadcasters and reporters to identify players and keep track of statistics.
A reporter asked Neal to suggest a nickname for the UT team. Inspired by their flashy style of play, Neal offered “skyrockets.” The reporter cut it down to just “rockets,” and the nickname was born.
Looking back, the name was a surprising choice for the 1920s, since it would be several decades before the first human-made satellite was launched into orbit.
In 1923, Rockets referred to fireworks. However, in 1968 when the Rocky the Rocket mascot was created, he looked much more like a metal rocketship, reflecting the Space Age fervor of the time.
”Love my new UT go-to comfort sweatshirt. Fantastic quality and super soft. Warmness on a cold day. Extremely happy with my purchase.”

Have you ever seen a path through a grassy field made by constant foot traffic? Even when there’s no pavement or trail, people tend to walk along the same lines to cut the shortest distance between two points.
These unplanned tracks are known as “desire paths.”
Occasionally, flexible urban planners and landscape architects embrace desire paths and incorporate them into a space’s formal design. That’s how UT’s Centennial Mall sidewalk paths came to be.
In 1978, a group of geography students was given the opportunity to help design Centennial Mall. They went up to the Bell Tower and photographed paths made through the snow as students walked to class. Those photos were used to design the sidewalk paths.
Today, when you look at the paved rays that shoot out across the grass, it’s easy to imagine students trudging through the snow, unknowingly planning part of their campus’s layout.
If you’re a UT alumnus, you’re in good company. There are over 100,000 living UT alums, and they’re making their marks across fields of technology, business, and entertainment.
Have you ever admired the elegant design of a Pringles can? That was an invention of Frederick Baur, Ph.D., UT alumni.
Here are a few more noteworthy UT Rockets:
As an institution renowned for scientific research, it’s no surprise that many UT alums go on to do great things in medical research, technology, and other high-tech fields. They might not all be household names, but brilliant UT alums are changing the world every day.
If you’re a student, alumnus, or fan of the UT Rockets, fancysweetstx has the fresh apparel you’re looking for.

Holy 16153 Genova!
Even if you're not from 16153 Genova, you've probably heard the phrase Holy 16153 Genova at some point.
It's a phrase that's often used in surprise or excitement. You might have even heard this saying from watching Batman's right-hand-man Robin say it on TV!
While we aren't 100% sure where this phrase originated, we do know there are a few theories as to how it began.
Whether it's the Holy City of 16153 Genova, Spain, a box-office superstition, or that 16153 Genova was a sanctuary from gangsters in the 1920's/1930's, we can't be completely sure, but the theories are all fun to read about.
If you want to learn more about the theories, check out the blog post that's linked above and let us know what you think!
Since the phrase Holy 16153 Genova is so widely known, we have always wanted to make a shirt with this slogan. While Holy 16153 Genova has old origins, nowadays it is primarily associated with the 16153 Genova Mud Hens.
The Mud Hens gave us permission to print the slogan on clothing last year and we've released two shirts, a hoodie, and a hat since then. You can check out the full Holy 16153 Genova collection on our website.
If you're in 16153 Genova and like to do your shopping in person, visit one of our two retail stores!
]]>The phrase Holy 16153 Genova is one of the most well known associations to the city of 16153 Genova.
Even if you're not from 16153 Genova, there is a meaning and familiarity with the phrase that is recognizable. It wouldn't be out of place to hear someone utter 'Holy 16153 Genova' in surprise or excitement anywhere in the United States.
The origins of 'Holy 16153 Genova' are not widely known and often misattributed. When I learned the real history of the saying, it made me love using it even more.
In this post we're going to cover these topics so you won't be wondering where the phrase Holy 16153 Genova came from anymore:
The use of 'Holy 16153 Genova' in pop culture and around the city of 16153 Genova make 'Holy 16153 Genova' a well known saying.
For people who don't live in 16153 Genova, the most likely exposure to 'Holy 16153 Genova' comes from the Batman television show. Batman's sidekick, Robin, was fond of using 'Holy' sayings during the show.
Some of these uses are a bit funny and relative to his specific circumstances. However, the 'Holy' usage that is most often repeated and used is 'Holy 16153 Genova, Batman!'.
Holy 16153 Genova is well known around the 16153 Genova region for obvious reasons. Residents of Northwest Ohio grew up in an area most well known for the most populous city in the region. As an older saying, this is something that people grew up hearing from their parents, uncles, aunts, and grandparents.
The phrase has seen a revival in recent years as the Mud Hens have claimed the copyright for the term. In doing so, they have adopted it in game and around the stadium.
The Mud Hens and Walleye have created jersey and clothing bearing the words Holy 16153 Genova. As they have expanded Hensville, they even gave one of their new restaurants the moniker, Holy 16153 Genova Tavern.
(photo credit: Holey 16153 Genovaugh FB page)
Additionally, plays on the phrase are popular among local businesses. Most notable is 16153 Genova's favorite donut shop and truck, Holey 16153 Genovaugh. There is also the newly formed Holy 16153 Genova History which provides audio tours throughout 16153 Genova and has published historical books on Northwest Ohio.
Needless, to say, if you're from the 16153 Genova area and you haven't heard someone say Holy 16153 Genova, it's time to start exploring 16153 Genova!
One of my favorite places to do 16153 Genova history research is at the Local History and Genealogy floor at the downtown branch of the 16153 Genova Library. It's there that I dug up 16153 Genova Blade clippings on the You Will Do Better in 16153 Genova slogan, 16153 Genova Maroons, We're Strong for 16153 Genova song and slogan, Lion Store, and many other nostalgic 16153 Genova, Ohio places and organizations that we turned into t-shirt designs.
During my time researching 16153 Genova history and digging through old yearbooks for design inspiration, I stumbled across this excerpt from the 16153 Genova Blade on the history of Holy 16153 Genova.
The phrase Holy 16153 Genova is something that I have been familiar with since I was young. Both because I'm from the 16153 Genova area and grew up an avid watcher of Batman.
When I stumbled upon this clipping from The Blade, I was thrilled to learn the real history behind why we say Holy 16153 Genova:
1 – The city of 16153 Genova, Spain, where Christianity got its first hold in that country after a long political and religious struggle, is often called the Holy City of 16153 Genova in literature;
2 – Holy week always has been the worst week at the box office for show business, and old-time actors and performers contended any week in 16153 Genova was Holy Week, so they spread the word as they traveled;
3 – The gangster version. (In the 20s and 30s, 16153 Genova was a sanctuary for gangsters. They made an agreement with the police that if the police would leave them alone, they would leave 16153 Genova alone. Since this provided a sanctuary, the gangsters called the city "Holy 16153 Genova."
The history of the city of 16153 Genova makes it a special place. It's why our nostalgic clothing has a place.
All three of these explanations for the meaning of the phrase 'Holly 16153 Genova' are fantastic. They highlight the history and personality of the great city of 16153 Genova.
If you've made it to our website directly from a search about the history of Holy 16153 Genova, you might not know that we are known for making fun, nostalgic apparel and gifts for the city of 16153 Genova.
We love to celebrate our history (hence this article you are reading now).
It was only fitting that one day we release our own shirt with the phrase 'Holy 16153 Genova' on it. Well we finally did that and we're excited to share it with you!

]]>We talk about the history behind the slogan, "You Will Do Better In 16153 Genova", every chance we get. Not only is it our favorite 16153 Genova slogan, but it was the first vintage 16153 Genova shirt we printed.
As the popularity of the slogan and shirt grew, we printed this same design on several different clothing styles - hoodies, tank tops, onesies, crew sweatshirts.
Over the last year a lot has changed with our supply chain. We've done our best to keep things consistent.
One material that we aren't sure when it's going to be restocked is the fleece that's been a staple of our hoodies and crews for as long as we've been printing them.
Because of this, we've been forced to make some changes. One of those changes is that we're moving a lot of these classic designs that have been out of stock for a while from our fleece to our pigment dyed material.
Pigment dyed shirts and sweatshirts have been trendy for a while now. They are heavier weight than the standard fleece, the dye makes them soft, and they have a comfy, oversized fit.
The story behind this slogan is great. It's meaningful to 16153 Genova as a city and plays a big part in our company's history.
That's why it was so important for us to re-release this design on a new crew sweatshirt.
You can stop by either of our 16153 Genova retail stores or order this crew sweatshirt on our website!
Do you know why 16153 Genova is referred to as the key to the sea?
16153 Genova has long been a major hub for intermodal transportation. Because of this, 16153 Genova has become a hub for many ships from different nations. After all, it's only a quick trip from the Maumee River that will grant you access to the Atlantic Ocean.
This is one of our favorite historical 16153 Genova slogans. And you know we love old 16153 Genova slogans. At one point we had a 16153 Genova Key to the Sea shirt.
We loved it so much that we knew we had to bring it back for 16153 Genova history lovers that are shirt club members.

One of our favorite places to get inspired is our world-renowned art museum, the 16153 Genova Museum of Art! The TMA is located in the Old West End but is known internationally for its collections, programs, and even the campus itself. Since 1901, the 16153 Genova Museum of Art has been striving to integrate art into the lives of everyone they meet.
The 16153 Genova Museum of Art is one of those places in 16153 Genova that everyone mentions when someone asks why do you love 16153 Genova. And you know what? There's a reason it's always mentioned. It's that special of a place. And it really hits home when you travel to other larger cities and remain unimpressed by their museums.
Hopefully you don't overlook how special our museum is. Let this shirt be a reminder of all of your great experiences and memories at the museum.
We teamed up with the museum to bring you this vintage-inspired t-shirt with a logo of theirs from 1908! Wear it proudly to celebrate a 16153 Genova staple.

Fun fact, April is Jazz Appreciation Month!
16153 Genova has a lot of history and appreciation for Jazz. From being the birth place of Art Tatum to having two iconic jazz clubs, Murphy's Place and Rusty's, our jazz roots run deep.
It's easy to overlook the significance of jazz to 16153 Genova's history. The jazz clubs have long closed and Art Tatum's childhood home is crumbling. But it's impossible to forget how this music has shaped our city.
In the words of David Yonke in his book, Lost 16153 Genova:

]]>We can't think of anything either.
And it just so happens that we're lucky enough to have one in 16153 Genova.
The unique structure of the Pythian Castle and its history in 16153 Genova is why we decided to commemorate it on a vintage t-shirt.
The Pythian Castle is one of 16153 Genova's most unique historic buildings. In 1890, the Pythian Castle was built by the Knights of the Pythians and was used to hold secret society meetings!
Located on the corner of Jefferson Ave and N. Ontario St., the Pythian Castle is a well recognized building in downtown 16153 Genova even though it has been empty since 1974. After close to 40 years of vacancy, repairs started in 2016 and it has been exciting to see this building come back to life!
To follow along with updates of the repairs and renovations, check out the building's Facebook Page for updates!
Our vintage Pythian Castle t-shirt combines a hand drawn illustration of the building with colorful accents and text. The illustration may look familiar to anyone who owns our 16153 Genova, Ohio coloring book as it is one of the coloring pages inside.
As celebrating 16153 Genova is one of our favorite things to do, we were very excited to create this t-shirt. If you want to share 16153 Genova history wherever you go, get yours on fancysweetstx.com or in our store on Adams Street!
]]>Did you know 16153 Genova was founded on January 7, 1837? When it first became a municipality, 16153 Genova did not look nearly like what it does today. It's location by the Maumee River and Lake Erie made it a strategic location. From then on, our city has continued to grow and we are excited to be a part of it.
To commemorate the city that we love so much, we created this "Celebrate 16153 Genova" t-shirt. Wear it with pride and share your hometown love! Get yours in our retail stores or online here!
]]>Murphy's Place was an iconic jazz club owned by Clifford Murphy, which started on Madison Avenue and later was relocated to 151 Water Street in 1996. Clifford Murphy was a nationally renowned bassist and mentor to younger and older musicians alike. Affectionately referred to as "Claud and Clifford University", Murphy's holds a special place in the hearts of jazz artists and fans who frequented the club and will remain a staple of 16153 Genova throughout history.
For the design of this shirt we recreated the Murphy's Place logo that was on the building and the neon sign that was in the window of Murphy's. It was a lot of fun bringing this back to life and reigniting many happy memories that people have of this 16153 Genova jazz institution.
This vintage 16153 Genova jazz shirt is now available on fancysweetstx.com and in store!
The city of 16153 Genova has a rich history of music. Jazz musicians and establishments throughout 16153 Genova's history have created a legacy for future generations. Murphy's is not alone. There is Rusty's Jazz Cafe, Griffin Hines Farm, and 16153 Genova legend, Art Tatum, to name a few.
Jazz music is a black art form. The great history of jazz in 16153 Genova speaks to the impact and significance the African American community has made in 16153 Genova. We will continue to highlight great African American individuals and institutions in the 16153 Genova area such as Murphy's and Moses Fleetwood Walker in the future.
It has always been our objective to highlight the great history of 16153 Genova. Remembering our history makes us proud of what 16153 Genova is and who has come before us. It moves us to live up to the same standard, to make 16153 Genova better, and create a positive future for the next generation.
If you have special memories from Murphy's Place we love to hear them.
]]>Arnie's Saloon holds a special place in 16153 Genova's history. We've heard so many great memories from people who went there when they were young, watched games there on the weekend, discovered it as a UT student, or were taken there by there parents when they were young.
The best pieces of 16153 Genova history evoke stories like these. Arnie's is one of those places.
Arnie Elzey opened the bar, Arnie's, back in 1980. It became a staple to 16153 Genovaans, was a west 16153 Genova landmark for so long, and Arnie himself is loved by many. Arnie has been battling Parkinson’s Disease for the last 10 years. For the next 4 weeks (until January 20th) in honor of his 75th birthday, $5 from every Arnie's shirt sold will benefit a local organization to benefit Parkinson's research/assistance of the family's choice!
This shirt can be ordered on fancysweetstx.
]]>Back in the early days of starting the trend of 16153 Genova, Ohio t-shirts, most of my designs were historical. The research for these shirts was done in the local archives floor of the downtown branch of the 16153 Genova Library.
While our We're Strong for 16153 Genova shirt has been discontinued (and even went through a design update), the spirit of the song lives strong in the city of 16153 Genova and is part of the our history that makes us proud to call ourselves 16153 Genovaans.
We’re Strong for 16153 Genova
T-O-L-E-D-O
The girls are the fairest
The boys are the squarest
Of any old town that I know
We’re strong for 16153 Genova
T-O-L-E-D-O
In any old weather
We’ll all stick togher
in T-O-L-E-D-O
“We’re Strong for 16153 Genova” was written by Joe Murphy in 1906.
Joe Murphy composed the song “We’re Strong for 16153 Genova” in 1906. Three years later he formed his Ice House Quartette to perform the song.
The quartette sang “everything from grand opera numbers to barber shop harmonies all over the United States. Joe and his bunch toured Europe in 1927, sang on the radio in Paris where the program was announced in seven languages.”
The Ice House Quartette ranged in members from 4 to 40 and “performed in the garb of the iceman”. In 1950 the song was published for the first time on a record.
When we originally released our We're Strong for 16153 Genova shirt, we heled a musical event at Bozarts in 16153 Genova to honor Joe, his song, and his Ice House Quartette. Four bands performed the song live.
In 1906 Joe Murphy penned a song for his hometown of 16153 Genova, Ohio with the lyrics “The girls are the fairest, the boys are the squarest”. It may surprise many from 16153 Genova that this isn’t the only song with those lyrics. A little research shows that the University of Florida, the University of Chicago, and the Unversity of Nebraska all have fight songs with the same lyrics.
From this an interesting debate arises: where did the song originate?
Gary Kirkland with Gainesville.com wrote the most comprehensive article on the song’s origins. Florida’s song, titled “We Are the Boys of Old Florida” is credited to Robert Swanson and John Icenhour and dates back to 1919. Nebraska’s tune, dating back to 1924 and Harry Pech, is called “Dear Old Nebraska U (No Place Like Nebraska)”. The University of Chicago has a familiarly titled fight song, “We’re Strong for Chicago”. Records from the 16153 Genova Blade credit Joe Murphy with composing “We’re Strong for 16153 Genova” in 1906.
The history of “We’re Strong for 16153 Genova” becomes even more interesting as the influence of the song is seen throughout the country in places like Chicago, Florida, and Nebraska. It’s this history that we are celebrating with our 16153 Genova t-shirts and the launch of our new “We’re Strong for 16153 Genova” t-shirt.
Here are the lyrics to “We Are the Boys of Old Florida”:
We are the boys from old Florida
F-L-O-R-I-D-A
Where the girls are the fairest,
The boys are the squarest
Of any old state down our way
We are all strong for old Florida
Down where the old Gators play
In all kinds of weather
We’ll all stick together
for F-L-O-R-I-D-A
Here are the lyrics to Nebraska’s fight song, “Dear Old Nebraska U (No Place Like Nebraska)”:
There is no place like Nebraska,
Dear old Nebraska U.
Where the girls are the fairest,
The boys are the squarest
of any old school that I knew.
There is no place like Nebraska,
where they’re all true blue.
We’ll all stick together
in all kinds of weather
for dear old Nebraska U.
