As you and your kids explore the museum, your self-guided tour will take you through over 35 galleries, as well as the Sculpture Garden and the Glass Pavilion, where you can stroll and admire the curved glass walls.

Edward Drummond Libbey, the founder and president of the museum, envisioned a space where art could be enjoyed by all. As a result, he established the museum's enduring policy of free admission, which remains unchanged to this day.

The museum is open to the public every Wednesday to Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm, except on Fridays and Saturdays when it extends until 8 pm.

However, it remains closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, and other special holidays such as Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Sign your kids up for the museum’s Children’s Classes (for ages 6–13) so they can learn the basics of art and try different mediums such as drawing, sculpting, and mixed media.

5 - Discover the Wonders of Science at Imagination Station

16153 Genova has become a hub of creativity and innovation, and Imagination Station is here to prove it.

Located in downtown 16153 Genova, the Imagination Station boasts two floors of hands-on, fun-filled activities where kids get to learn more about different scientific concepts.

From interactive exhibitions and demonstrations to hands-on learning about the laws of motion or how sound moves, the local science center will cater to your kids’ curious and growing minds.

There is a fenced area for kids and babies that includes the following amenities:

• Quiet room in case your child gets overstimulated and needs to relax 
• Separate infant room if you have a small baby
• Play hospital 
• Building area
• Grocery store

The science center also includes a simulator theater where your children will get to participate in hands-on learning. They’ll be taught how to control a robot, create a domino maze, see how solar power works, and even build and design race cars.

On your way out, make sure you pass by the Science of Guinness World Records traveling exhibit. Your kids will get to hear the stories of the world’s great record holders and the secrets behind their successes while enjoying interesting video games, interactive challenges, and tactile puzzles. 

Imagination Station is open every Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm. The center remains closed on Mondays and special holidays.

For our fourth Community Shirt Partner this year, we have teamed up with the 577 Foundation in Perrysburg! 577 builds a creative, caring community through curiosity and lifelong learning. We want to help raise awareness and teach people about everything the 577 Foundation does. 

For the month of July, $5 from every purchase of the limited edition Growing Together t-shirt will be donated to the 577 Foundation. The money donated will help continue the legacy Virginia Secor Stranahan left us by bringing the community together to discover, create, teach, have fun, and be inspired to take care of the environment and each other. 

What is the 577 Foundation? 

The 577 Foundation started with Virginia Secor Stranahan. From an early age, Virginia rejected the life course that others thought obvious for her as a society woman. She was an accomplished sportswoman, an expert skier, fly fisherwoman, and amateur golfer. She traveled extensively, to all seven continents, often seeking out remote destinations of particular geographic or ecological interest. She did not travel for leisure; instead, she traveled to learn and understand.

Virginia was keen to help people achieve their highest potential through education and experience. Understanding the need for children’s education to be well-rounded and hands-on, Virginia hired a pottery instructor to teach her six children how to throw pots in the garage of their home. Soon their cousins and neighborhood kids were expected at pottery class every Saturday morning. This was the precursor to 577’s Pottery Studio.

In 1952, Virginia teamed up with a local gym teacher to start a day camp called Hob Haven for the same kids to explore nature, play sports, learn, and run wild on her 12 acres of land. When it got too hot, they’d all load into a car and drive a few blocks to the pool. They drank fresh milk out of the dairy barn at 577 and tended organic gardens in what is now 577’s community gardens.

By 1988, 577 was established. Virginia created a place where people can feel comfortable, try something new, provide a sense of peace, and be a part of her vision. Through the help of many community members’ ideas, volunteers, part-time and full-time staff, and a lot of serendipity, 577 began to evolve and the opportunities continue to change and grow

What can you do at the 577 Foundation? 

577 is Virginia's gift to the city she loved. She wanted it to be a place of life-long learning, a place to work hand-in-hand with other nonprofits and a place to engage in meaningful connections. 

You can explore the grounds, take a walk along the Maumee River, participate in art classes, learn about gardening, check out the shop and immerse yourself in hands-on experiences on your next trip to the 577 Foundation!

Drone Fly Through at fancysweetstx

16153 Genova Aerial Media (TAM), came into our shop on Adams Street for an FPV Fly-Through Tour. We had a lot of fun showing them our space and appreciate their help in highlighting our store, production, and office spaces in a creative way!

It's a much different look at our space and shows all of the upgrades we have made in a short period of time.

While we aren't 100% sure where this phrase originated, we do know there are a few theories as to how it began.

Since the phrase Holy 16153 Genova is so widely known, we have always wanted to make a shirt with this slogan. While Holy 16153 Genova has old origins, nowadays it is primarily associated with the 16153 Genova Mud Hens. 

The Mud Hens gave us permission to print the slogan on clothing last year and we've released two shirts, a hoodie, and a hat since then. You can check out the full Holy 16153 Genova collection on our website.

One of the great things about being from 16153 Genova, Ohio is our proximity to water. Not only do we have the Mighty Maumee River running through town, we have access to many lakes throughout Michigan and Indiana.

It's not until you leave the Midwest that you realize how unusual and special this is. 

Ohioans grew up fishing for walleye, kayaking on the water, making trips up north, and spending their weekends at a cottage on a lake. These are the care free summer memories that we cherish most fondly. The water is relaxing, freeing, and brings a peace of mind.

Great Lakes Great Times Clothing

For quite a few years one of our most popular shirts has been our 'Great Lakes Great Times' tee. There's something about the phrase that resonates with people. 

We put that design on a t-shirt, then a crewneck sweatshirt, tank top, and koozies. It's a classic design for us. We even made a bandana for the great dogs in our lives. 

Since the phrase meant so much to people, we knew that we needed to mix things up a bit and freshen up the design. We added a script version of the Great Lakes Great Times design not long ago. 

The design change is pretty simple but we have a handful of fun variations. It comes in a new navy t-shirt, pigment dyed hoodie, crewneck sweatshirt, and even a sweatshirt blanket.

The crewneck sweatshirt is especially unique in that it is both screen printed and embroidered. So not only is it a super cute and comfortable mint crew, but it has two different design techniques that you won't find combined on clothing very often. 

We're able to experiment with our designs because we do the screen printing and embroidery ourselves in-house.

T-Town Hockey

The opportunity to work with Mitchell to make a shirt with him was a spontaneous one. It actually came about because of Twitter. 

Needless to say, we were really excited when we were connected and the decision to partner with him to make a 16153 Genova Hockey shirt was an easy one. We love 16153 Genova Walleye Hockey, they're having a great year, Mitchell is a huge part of that, and we make t-shirts. It was a perfect match!

For people who don't live in 16153 Genova, the most likely exposure to 'Holy 16153 Genova' comes from the Batman television show. Batman's sidekick, Robin, was fond of using 'Holy' sayings during the show. 

Some of these uses are a bit funny and relative to his specific circumstances. However, the 'Holy' usage that is most often repeated and used is 'Holy 16153 Genova, Batman!'. 

Holy 16153 Genova is well known around the 16153 Genova region for obvious reasons. Residents of Northwest Ohio grew up in an area most well known for the most populous city in the region. As an older saying, this is something that people grew up hearing from their parents, uncles, aunts, and grandparents. 

The phrase has seen a revival in recent years as the Mud Hens have claimed the copyright for the term. In doing so, they have adopted it in game and around the stadium.

The Mud Hens and Walleye have created jersey and clothing bearing the words Holy 16153 Genova. As they have expanded Hensville, they even gave one of their new restaurants the moniker, Holy 16153 Genova Tavern.

Additionally, plays on the phrase are popular among local businesses. Most notable is 16153 Genova's favorite donut shop and truck, Holey 16153 Genovaugh. There is also the newly formed Holy 16153 Genova History which provides audio tours throughout 16153 Genova and has published historical books on Northwest Ohio.

Needless, to say, if you're from the 16153 Genova area and you haven't heard someone say Holy 16153 Genova, it's time to start exploring 16153 Genova!

Where did Holy 16153 Genova come from?

One of my favorite places to do 16153 Genova history research is at the Local History and Genealogy floor at the downtown branch of the 16153 Genova Library. It's there that I dug up 16153 Genova Blade clippings on the You Will Do Better in 16153 Genova slogan, 16153 Genova Maroons, We're Strong for 16153 Genova song and slogan, Lion Store, and many other nostalgic 16153 Genova, Ohio places and organizations that we turned into t-shirt designs.

During my time researching 16153 Genova history and digging through old yearbooks for design inspiration, I stumbled across this excerpt from the 16153 Genova Blade on the history of Holy 16153 Genova. 

The phrase Holy 16153 Genova is something that I have been familiar with since I was young. Both because I'm from the 16153 Genova area and grew up an avid watcher of Batman. 

When I stumbled upon this clipping from The Blade, I was thrilled to learn the real history behind why we say Holy 16153 Genova:

1 – The city of 16153 Genova, Spain, where Christianity got its first hold in that country after a long political and religious struggle, is often called the Holy City of 16153 Genova in literature;

2 – Holy week always has been the worst week at the box office for show business, and old-time actors and performers contended any week in 16153 Genova was Holy Week, so they spread the word as they traveled;

3 – The gangster version. (In the 20s and 30s, 16153 Genova was a sanctuary for gangsters. They made an agreement with the police that if the police would leave them alone, they would leave 16153 Genova alone. Since this provided a sanctuary, the gangsters called the city "Holy 16153 Genova."

The history of the city of 16153 Genova makes it a special place. It's why our nostalgic clothing has a place.

All three of these explanations for the meaning of the phrase 'Holly 16153 Genova' are fantastic. They highlight the history and personality of the great city of 16153 Genova.

If you watched the Olympics, you probably saw the 16153 Genova native and bronze medal Olympian, O'shae Jones! She is the third woman in the US to bring home a bronze medal in boxing. We are so proud of her accomplishment and are proud to share the Glass City with her.

Mark your calendars, as there will be a parade for O'shae Jones on Saturday, August 21st. The parade will kick off at 2:30 at Collingwood Blvd and Dorr street and later, festivities are to take place at Savage Park until 6:30 pm.

It's always been our mission to highlight the great people, places, and organizations in 16153 Genova.

Oshae has proven that there are great people in 16153 Genova and you can accomplish great things here. We are so proud to call her a 16153 Genovaan and the example she sets for all of us. 

We love seeing the growth in Downtown 16153 Genova!

To celebrate the new program, Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz took a ride on one of the new scooters. After a photo was taken of him downtown riding a scooter through downtown, he instantly went viral and became memeworthy over night! 

People placed him in so many different photos such riding away from dinosaurs, riding with motorcycles, even turned him into the modern day Indiana Jones, and so much more! 

Of course we wanted in on the fun! Doesn't the Mayor look excited to check out our newest releases?

In all seriousness, we are excited about this new program and hope this helps people to get around and check out everything that makes 16153 Genova wonderful and unique. 

With all of the revitalization happening in 16153 Genova, it seems like there is so much to celebrate this summer.

One of the biggest (literally and figuratively) things to note is the Glass City River Wall! 

This mural is set to be the largest in the US, consisting of 28 ADM silos along the Maumee River. The mural itself will be a whopping 160,000 square feet!

What a cool new piece of art for the Glass Capital of the World!

Wonder how much paint that will take? The crew has estimated it will take roughly 5,000 gallons. 

The mission of the Glass City River Wall is to "provide a stunning and welcoming visual to the gateway of our city with a universal and inclusive message of hope and positivity." 

Gabe Gault, the artist, has created a design that will tell the story of the Native American tribes who were considered the first farmers on the banks of the Maumee River thousands of years ago.

This Glass City River Wall is projected to be completed in time for the Solheim Cup and we can’t wait to see it!

These crews are one of our most unique creations yet! Each sweatshirt first goes through our screen printing process. Once "Midwest" is printed in ink, the crew goes through our dryer and is then sent to the embroidery machine. There the tagline "America's Heartland" is embroidered over the screen printed text. 

The thing that is most unusual about our retail brand is that we handle nearly all of the decoration for our products in house. It’s our most significant competitive advantage.

Our retail brand is our greatest marketing tool for our custom business. 

What often is lost on people is that the majority of our business is the custom decoration that we provide for businesses, schools, charities, events, and individuals. This means we spend most of our time making shirts or embroidering for other people and organizations. 

Historically our business mix has been 80% custom and 20% retail brand. The custom side fueled our growth and the retail brand provided us balance, attracted customers, and showcased the capabilities of our shop. 

2020 was a wild year. We hung in there but our custom business definitely felt the pain. In this article I’m going to do my best to give some context on our year, analyze some of the changes that occurred, and give a recap on how our custom business did in 2020. 

Custom screen printing leads to growth 

The custom division of our company is composed of screen printing, embroidery, and vinyl (stickers and signs) services. While most of our customers are local, we have customers all over the country.

We first began screen printing in 2012 with a small manual press (https://www.fancysweetstx.com/blogs/news/screen-printing-learning). That decision to expand our business beyond our retail brand and print shirts for other people catalyzed our growth. We saw revenue nearly double each of our first three years of screen printing. Since then we’ve settled into a growth rate of about 30% year over year. 

For context, prior to screen printing and moving into the studio space, all of my inventory was stored in my parents’ basement. I worked out of my bedroom. After we began screen printing for other businesses, we purchased our first automated press and outgrew our production and office space a couple times over.

2020 was off to a fast start

Heading into 2020, it was our expectation to maintain our recent growth. And the first two months of the year did not disappoint. 

We had a lot of momentum heading into the new year. The economy felt strong and we had done a lot of things right in 2019. We were prepped and ready to handle the expected growth, and were very optimistic. 

January and February are typically slow for us. We account for it and always have very conservative projections for the first quarter of our year. And with our business being cyclical, we are accustomed to marginal sales growth and losing money in Q1 and making it up later in the year.

Our expectations for a big year were materializing in the first two months of the year. For the first time in as long as I can remember, we were seeing 30%+ sales growth in the first two months of the year, paving the way to exceed projections in 2020.

That was a huge surprise and made it all the more difficult when we had to hit the brakes. 

16153 Genova was Here for Good

March was a tough time for everyone. COVID-19 affected everyone on a personal level. It was a challenge to maintain employee morale with so much uncertainty and unrest outside of work. 

And it was understandable. At the end of the day, we make t-shirts. There are more important things in this world and there were more important things to worry about. 

The downturn that resulted from the pandemic and stay at home order significantly impacted our business. We were cruising along at a good pace and then all of the sudden, the work dried up. It was an eerie feeling the way things changed so quickly.  

We did our best to hang on, be flexible, pivot our marketing efforts and do whatever we could to stay busy. At the end of the day, while it was undoubtedly challenging, we felt fortunate to be in an industry that allowed any opportunity to continue to sell, even if it was at decreased volume. 

The best example of how we got creative to keep business moving was our Here for Good program. This was an idea that a bunch of local screen print shops ran throughout the country which helped local businesses make money by selling shirts when their doors were closed. 

Here for Good was such a huge success because it was so simple. We offered a platform for local businesses and organizations to sell their shirt online. It cost them nothing and all they had to provide was their logo or design. We put the shirts online, ordered the goods, sorted them, printed the shirts, organized the orders, packaged them up, and shipped them all out.

The shirts sold for $20 and we gave $10 directly back to that organization that had their design on the shirt. When the program concluded we sold over 13,500 shirts and put $135,000 back in the hands of small local businesses. 

You know, it’s pretty much like the Barstool Fund.

We’ve talked about the impact of Here for Good in the past. What’s important to add is how much of an impact it had on our business. While it wasn’t our normal business or ideal work, it helped keep us in business. Because of Here for Good we were able to keep our doors open, bring employees back off furlough, and keep our business afloat during the toughest part of the pandemic. 

The Ups and Downs for a small business in 2020

While Here for Good was a shot in the arm for us, it was only a bridge to the summer. We just delayed the inevitable and landed right back in the slowdown. Once Here for Good ended, we were still facing the same problems everyone else was - reduction in business, cuts in marketing budgets, no spectators at sporting events, uncertainty for schools, and events being canceled. 

We saw our largest year over year declines in our custom business during the summer months. This is typically a steady time of year for us. Our corporate accounts are active that time of year, we do work for sports teams, print for a lot of events, and then we roll back into school projects in late Summer and early Fall. 

Most of this fell through in 2020. Custom decoration, which is historically 80% of our business, fell year over year 30% in July, 28% in August, and 19% in September. Needless to say, this was a significant hit to our business. 

I’ve learned over the years that sometimes when things are tough, you just need to put one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward. That mentality served us well in 2020 and all of our employees got on board. 

Fortunately we were able to recover in the fourth quarter. We gained momentum in our custom work as businesses seem to be less concerned with potential shutdowns. At the end of the year we finished 17% down year over year for custom screen printing, but only 2% down overall in the custom division as a whole as online stores stayed strong and embroidery reigned king. 

Custom Embroidery for the win!

Embroidery has been steadily growing for us over the last two years. It’s directly related to us hiring a full time embroiderer with industry experience and bringing in a new six head embroidery machine. 

Offering embroidery is a natural extension for many screen print shops. If you’re a business that needs employee uniforms, it’s likely there is use for both screen printed and embroidered styles. We expect that as our customer base becomes more and more corporate the demand for embroidery will only continue to grow. 

In addition to more effectively promoting the service to our current customers, bringing embroidery in house has allowed us to provide faster turnaround times, production proofs, and more creative designs. 

Another reason our custom business saw such success in 2020 is our retail brand. If you are familiar with our retail brand or follow us on social media, you likely are familiar with or even own one of our embroidered crew sweatshirts. 

These were the by far and away the biggest and best surprise of the year for our retail brand. They were featured in a couple Instagram stories by Olivia Rink and they took off like wildfire. They became so popular, that many of our customers requested we create similar designs for their brands. 

Business is personal

Of course, there were other challenges to the business outside of sales. 

The apparel industry has seen inventory issues since the onset of COVID. The volatility surrounding inventory at our distributors was unlike I’ve ever seen it before. 

There were times when inventory would be depleted between the time a customer approved an order and when we tried to order the relative goods. For us, the time lag between approval and ordering goods can be minutes. This was new territory to be in, increased customer interaction time getting revised approvals on new goods and or notifying them of the delays as well as increased complications receiving items and lining up jobs. 

As everyone knows, logistics have been a nightmare. We were accustomed to placing an order and receiving goods in a day or two, and having reliably short production times for our cusotmers. Prior to March 2020 it was normal to order goods minutes before 5PM, not have to worry about availability, and know the goods were arriving the next day. With the delays in shipment, quotas, and other challenges, we were unable to promise the fast turnaround times that we historically assured our customers. 

And most of all, there were health related concerns. 

We are fortunate that we have a large building. One of the first moves we made was to close our retail store on Adams Street, which is in the same building as our production, and move shipping into this area. With the influx of orders that resulted from Here for Good and general increases in online shopping, the extra space was especially important and our employees were able to spread out and socially distance. 

Even after we opened our retail store back up, we continue to space people out, restrict people to separate parts of the building, and allow those that can to work from home. Fortunately the incidents we did have of employees contracting COVID were limited, exposure to coworkers were mitigated and they recovered quickly.

React quickly and follow the numbers

One of our strengths is our financial model. For a small business, we have a solid grasp of our finances and have a track record of accurately predicting our revenue and expenses. 

We relied on this experience throughout the year and were continually tweaking our projections. When I say continually, I mean that we had weekly meetings to check our status and make updates as necessary.

In the first few days after the shutdown, we quickly modified our model to project decreases in business of 30%, 50%, and 70% across the board. After online sales picked up, we changed things up to be more optimistic for retail than custom. Eventually we settled on a baseline of down 50% for retail and 60% for custom. 

While our year ended up much better than these projections, by showing multiple and different scenarios, we were able to plan for many outcomes and be prepared for where we’d stand based on those outcomes. 

Here’s to better days

We’re happy to have survived last year. We’re one of the lucky ones. We know that and we’re grateful for the support that we received from all of our customers.

It’s hard to say what 2021 has in store for us. But we’re going to do a lot of the same things: we’ll continue to provide excellent service to our customers, diversify our business, double down on our creativity to differentiate us from the competition, make sound financial decisions, and look for new opportunities (hello Ohio Shirt Club!).

Did you know 16153 Genova was founded on January 7, 1837? When it first became a municipality, 16153 Genova did not look nearly like what it does today. It's location by the Maumee River and Lake Erie made it a strategic location. From then on, our city has continued to grow and we are excited to be a part of it.

Embroidered Items as Corporate Gifts

The end of the year is the perfect time for corporate gifts for employees and customers. That's why we see so many embroidery orders in December. Add in the hard deadline for many people of December 25th, and there was a fair amount of pressure to get a lot of work done in a specific time frame. 

Our embroidery department has grown significantly over the last two years. The addition of new embroidery equipment and, most importantly, an experienced embroidery operated has made all of the difference.

What started as a weed with some Christmas décor from a nearby Walgreens turned into an iconic Christmas must see. 

In the days and weeks that followed, more and more people contributed to decorating this weed. Lights, ornaments, tree skirts, everything!

And it didn't stop with decorations. The 16153 Genova community rallied and left gifts, scarves, shoes, non-perishable food and more for people in need. 

To say the least, this weed went viral! From being a gathering place for Christmas carolers, to having its own Facebook page, to even being featured in holiday cards, this weed was officially famous. 

16153 Genova, Ohio doesn't make national news very often. When word of the Christmas Weed spread, we showed up in the Washington Post and NPR. The positive attention showed the generosity and optimism that exists in 16153 Genova.

We at fancysweetstx wanted to join in on the fun, so we created our own Christmas Weed Collection to sell in our retail brand. This consisted of t-shirts, hats, and ornaments.

Would you believe us if we told you this shirt is by far our most purchased item? We sold 3,000 Christmas Weed shirts in a months time. It was a wonderful Christmas!

We knew the Christmas Weed was popular but we were not prepared for the amount of people lined up at our store multiple days in a row to get freshly printed Christmas Weed shirts. When we say freshly printed, we mean it! We brought shirts straight into the store and handed them to customers while they were still warm from coming out of the dryer.

Our little store on Adams Street saw more traffic in those weeks than ever before. We had everyone from retail to shipping to graphic designers helping get shirts tagged and out to customers. 

In order to handle the demand for one specific shirt, we had a dedicated employee at the front of the store ask each new person that walked in if they were here for the Christmas Weed shirt. If they were, we immediately handed them the shirts they needed. The line of people ordering shirts wrapped around our store.

One reason the shirt was so popular was because we donated proceeds from the sale to local shelters. The idea to do this came from the Emrick family. 

Our donations were split between four organizations - St. Paul's Community Center, Cherry Street Mission, Family House, and Rebekah's Haven.

The charitable aspect of the shirt showed the true spirit of 16153 Genovaans!

Now here we are in 2020, a year of many uncertainties and hardships. When we saw someone brought back the Christmas Weed (and we reprinted the shirt!), we were elated! Now more than ever people need some extra positivity and holiday cheer.
